Formation
Dr Ayyagari Sambasiva Rao, Padma Bhushan, popularly known as Dr A S Rao, was the founding Managing Director of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL).
Dr A S Rao was a scientist, teacher, entrepreneur and leader synthesized into one, in right proportions. He launched several young people to shoulder responsibilities in various spheres in the country. He was a strong believer in self-reliance.
Dr A S Rao was an embodiment of humility. Inspired by his ideals and vision, a few of his associates in ECIL and a few academics from the field of education founded the Society under the title of Dr A S Rao Awards Council and registered it under the Societies Act in 1989 ( Registration No. 2326/89)
The Council
The aim of school education is reduced to one of obtaining good marks leading to ver emphasis on bookish knowledge. It was felt that an independent voluntary organization could provide suitable direction to enthusiastic and talented students. Thus , a non- profit voluntary society under title “ Dr A S Rao Awards Council” was founded in 1988 (registered in 1989) In the name of first MD of ECIL Hyderabad. The aims of the council are (1) to spot nurture talented student ts, and (2) to promote excellence in teaching science and mathematics
